A 2,500-Year-Old Wisdom That Can Transform Your Relationships
This article is inspired by the Buddha’s teaching on Right Speech and reflects how I apply this timeless wisdom in the ALIVE Training Program and in everyday life.

Before You Speak…
A 2,500-Year-Old Wisdom That Can Transform Your Relationships
One of the simplest yet most profound practices I teach inside the ALIVE Training Program comes from a wisdom tradition that is more than 2,500 years old.
It is known as Noble Speech (Right Speech).
When I first encountered this teaching, I thought it was simply about communicating more kindly.
Over the years, I realised it is much deeper than that.
It is a practice of protecting your own mind, your relationships, and your peace.
Every word we speak creates something.
It either builds trust or slowly erodes it.
It either creates understanding or creates more suffering.
The beautiful thing is that Noble Speech isn’t something reserved for meditation retreats.
It can become a way of living.
Here are the questions I encourage my clients to practice every day.
1. Is it true?
Before speaking, pause.
Ask yourself:
Am I speaking from what I genuinely know?
Or am I speaking from assumptions…
old emotional wounds…
fear…
or a story my mind has created?
Many arguments don’t begin because people are lying.
They begin because people mistake their interpretation for the truth.
Truth requires awareness.
2. Is it beneficial?
Before speaking, ask yourself:
- What outcome am I hoping for?
- Will these words create more understanding?
- Am I speaking to help, or simply to relieve my own emotional discomfort?
- Can the other person actually receive what I’m trying to say?
- Am I speaking in a language they understand?
One question I ask myself often is this:
Will these words ultimately create more peace… or more unnecessary suffering?
Sometimes the most loving conversation is also the most uncomfortable one.
Perhaps someone has crossed your boundaries.
Perhaps they keep interrupting you.
Perhaps they expect more of your time than you can genuinely give.
Perhaps it’s about money.
Perhaps someone keeps asking for discounts, free advice, or more than you agreed to.
Avoiding those conversations rarely protects the relationship.
It usually creates resentment.
Noble Speech invites us to speak before resentment becomes anger.
To be honest before frustration becomes distance.
To communicate with kindness before silence becomes a wall between two people.
Sometimes love sounds like this:
“I’d like to talk about something that’s been sitting on my heart.”
“I’m happy to help, but I need us to find an arrangement that feels fair for both of us.”
“I care about this relationship, and that’s why I don’t want to leave this unspoken.”
Noble Speech isn’t about avoiding difficult conversations.
It is about making sure they come from awareness rather than emotional reaction.
3. Is this the right time?
Timing changes everything.
The right words spoken at the wrong moment often become the wrong words.
An overwhelmed mind cannot always hear wisdom.
Sometimes waiting is the wisest response.
Patience is part of communication.
4. Can I say it kindly?
Kindness doesn’t weaken truth.
It allows truth to be received.
Before speaking, ask yourself:
- Am I speaking to connect… or to win?
- Am I trying to understand… or simply to be understood?
Truth without kindness often creates defensiveness.
Kindness without truth creates dishonesty.
Healthy relationships need both.
5. Is it necessary?
Not every thought deserves a voice.
Sometimes silence is the wisest response.
Sometimes saying no is the wisest response.
Many people struggle to say no because they fear disappointing someone.
So they say yes…
while quietly disappointing themselves.
Over time, those small betrayals accumulate.
Not because another person intended to hurt them.
Because they never communicated their own limits.
Noble Speech teaches us that saying no can be one of the kindest things we do.
A respectful no protects honesty.
A delayed no often becomes resentment.
A dishonest yes often becomes exhaustion.
Learning to say,
“I’m not able to do that.”
“That doesn’t work for me.”
“I’d love to help, but I don’t have the capacity right now.”
isn’t selfish.
It’s responsible.
Healthy relationships don’t require endless sacrifice.
They require honest communication.
Noble Speech is also about what we refuse to speak.
This part is often forgotten.
Noble Speech asks us to become aware of the atmosphere our words create.
We don’t gossip.
We don’t backbite.
We don’t spread rumours.
We don’t speak about another person in a way we would never speak if they were standing beside us.
We don’t use words to humiliate.
To shame.
To belittle.
Or to destroy another person’s dignity.
Every word leaves a mark.
Before speaking about another person, ask yourself:
Would I be comfortable saying these exact words if they were standing here beside me?
If the answer is no…
perhaps those words don’t belong in the conversation.
Every conversation either builds something…
or slowly destroys something.
Choose your words accordingly.
Communication is measured by what reaches another person’s heart.
One of the biggest mistakes people make is believing communication is simply expressing themselves.
It isn’t.
Communication is successful only when another human being understands what you are trying to communicate.
Ask yourself:
- Can I say this more simply?
- Am I speaking in a language this person understands?
- Am I helping them receive what I’m trying to say?
Sometimes fewer words create deeper understanding.
Sometimes the most intelligent communication is the simplest one.
Why do we practice Noble Speech in the ALIVE Training Program?
Many people think Noble Speech is simply about being polite.
It isn’t.
Inside the ALIVE Training Program, it becomes a daily practice.
During our sessions, we speak honestly.
Sometimes we speak about painful experiences.
Sometimes we uncover emotions that have been hidden for decades.
That honesty is necessary.
Outside the sessions…
life becomes the practice.
My clients begin communicating differently.
Not because they suppress their emotions.
Because they become aware of the effect their words have on themselves and on the people around them.
They stop feeding emotional wounds through unconscious speech.
They stop complaining about the same problem without moving toward a solution.
They don’t leave elephants in the room.
When something needs to be addressed…
they address it honestly.
Kindly.
At the right time.
Without blame.
Without emotional dumping.
Without making another person responsible for their emotional state.
Over time, something beautiful begins to happen.
Their conversations change.
Less gossip.
Less complaining.
Less retelling painful stories.
More gratitude.
More appreciation.
More responsibility.
More clarity.
More genuine connection.
Not because life has become easier.
Because they have become more conscious.
Many of my clients tell me they feel lighter.
Their relationships become calmer.
Their homes become more peaceful.
Not because everyone around them changed.
Because they did.
They become people who speak from awareness instead of emotional reaction.
A Final Reflection
Many people believe Noble Speech is about protecting other people’s feelings.
I believe it’s something much deeper.
It protects relationships.
It protects trust.
It protects your own peace.
And it protects your integrity.
Every time you choose conscious speech…
you strengthen the relationship you have with yourself.
So before your next conversation…
Pause.
Take one breath.
Then quietly ask yourself:
- Is it true?
- Is it beneficial?
- Is this the right time?
- Can I say it kindly?
- Is it necessary?
Then ask yourself one final question.
Will my words build something…
or slowly destroy something?
Because words are never neutral.
They shape our relationships.
They shape our reputation.
They shape our inner world.
And perhaps most importantly…
They shape the person we are becoming.
Reading creates awareness.
Practice creates transformation.
Inside the ALIVE Training Program, Noble Speech isn’t simply something we discuss.
It becomes a daily practice.
Together, we learn how to communicate with honesty…
kindness…
clarity…
and self-respect.
Not because we’re trying to become perfect.
Because we’re learning to live with greater awareness.
If that is the journey you’re ready for…
I’d love to walk beside you.
With loving kindness
